2023-2024 Student Handbook Changes

Each school year, the Student Handbook is reviewed for necessary revisions and is posted to the District’s website. You can view the current Student Handbook on our website under General School Information >>> Parent Resources >>> Student Handbook.

There were some changes made this year that we would like to call out for our families.

Student Appearance

Schools shall not prohibit students from wearing or accessorizing the student’s graduation attire with items associated with the student’s culture, ethnic, or religious identity or any other protected characteristics identified in the Illinois Human Rights Act.

Sexual Abuse Response and Prevention Resource Guide

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) maintains a resource guide on sexual abuse response and prevention. This guide contains information on and the location of children’s advocacy centers, organizations that provide medical evaluations and treatment to victims of child sexual abuse, organizations that provide mental health evaluations and services to victims and families of victims of child sexual abuse, and organizations that offer legal assistance to and provide advocacy on behalf of victims of child sexual abuse. This guide can be accessed through the ISBE website at WWW.ISBE.NET.

Student Absences

School boards must allow “public middle school and high school” students one day-long excused absence per school year for the purpose of attending a civic event.

Complaints About Curriculum, Instructional Materials, and Programs

Parents or guardians with suggestions or complaints about curriculum, instructional materials, or programs should complete a Curriculum Objection Form. A parent or guardian may also request that their child be exempt from using a particular instructional material or program by completing a Curriculum Objection Form.

Fines, Fees, and Charges; Waiver of Student Fees

Fines for loss or damage to school property are waived for students who meet certain eligibility guidelines.

Prevention of and Response to Bullying, Intimidation, and Harassment

The amendment to this section expands the list of students who are protected under the handbook procedure and requires schools to attempt to notify a parent or guardian within 24 hours of the school’s administration becoming aware of an alleged bullying incident.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

This section defines how artificial intelligence may or may not be used in school. Artificial intelligence or “AI” is intelligence demonstrated by computers, as opposed to human intelligence. “Intelligence” encompasses the ability to learn, reason, generalize, and infer meaning. Examples of AI technology include ChatGPT and other chatbots.

Apariencia de los estudiantes

Las escuelas no deben prohibirle a los estudiantes que se vistan o que usen accesorios en sus atuendos de graduación asociados con la cultura, etnia o identidad religiosa o de cualquier otra característica protegida identificada en la Ley de Derechos Humanos de Illinois. 

Guía de recursos para la respuesta y prevención de los abusos sexuales

La Junta de educación del estado de Illinois (ISBE, por sus siglas en inglés), mantiene una guia de recursos para la respuesta y prevención del abuso sexual. Esta guía contiene información acerca de y de la ubicación de los centros de ayuda, organizaciones que proveen evaluaciones médicas y tratamiento para víctimas de abuso sexual de menores, organizaciones que proveen evaluaciones de salud mental y servicios para las víctimas y las familias de las víctimas de abuso sexual de menores, y organizaciones que ofrecen asistencia legal y abogan en favor de las víctimas de abuso sexual de menores. Ausencias de los estudiantes

Las juntas de educación deben permitirle a “estudiantes de escuela secundaria y de preparatoria” una ausencia justificada de un día con el propósito de asistir a un evento cívico. 

Quejas acerca del plan de estudios, materiales de instrucción y programas.

Los padres o tutores que tengan alguna queja o sugerencia acerca del plan de estudios, de materiales de instrucción o de programas, deben completar el Formulario de objeción al plan de estudios. El padre o tutor también puede solicitar que su hijo/a sea exento de usar un material de instrucción o de programa en particular llenando este mismo formulario. 

Multas, cuotas y cargos: Formulario de exención de cuotas estudiantiles.

Multas por pérdida o daños a la propiedad escolar no se aplican a estudiantes que cumplen con ciertas condiciones de elegibilidad. 

Prevención y respuesta al acoso, la intimidación y el hostigamiento.

La enmienda a esta sección expande la lista de estudiantes que están protegidos bajo el manual de procedimientos y requiere que las escuelas hagan el intento de notificar a los padres o tutor en un plazo de 24 horas desde que la administración del plantel tenga conocimiento del supuesto incidente.

Uso de Inteligencia Artificial

Esta sección define cómo la inteligencia artificial puede ser utilizada o no en la escuela. La inteligencia artificial o IA, por su siglas en inglés, es inteligencia demostrada por un computador, en vez de inteligencia humana. “Inteligencia” abarca la habilidad para aprender, razonar, generalizar y deducir el significado. Algunos ejemplos de tecnología IA incluyen ChatGPT y otros chatbots.
