Medical Certification for Home & Hospital Instruction

A student who is absent from school, or whose physician, physician assistant, or licensed advance practice registered nurse anticipates his or her absence from school because of a medical condition, may be eligible for instruction in the student’s home or hospital.

Appropriate educational services from qualified staff will begin no later than five school days after receiving a written statement from a physician, physician assistant, or licensed advance practice registered nurse. Instructional or related services for a student receiving special education services will be determined by the student's individualized education plan.

A student who is unable to attend school because of pregnancy will be provided home instruction, correspondence courses, or other courses of instruction before (1) the birth of the child when the student’s physician, physician assistant, or licensed advance practice nurse indicates, in writing, that she is medically unable to attend regular classroom instruction, and (2) for up to 3 months after the child’s birth or a miscarriage.

Qualifications for Home and Hospital Instruction

  • In order to be eligible for home or hospital instruction provided by Round Lake Area Schools District 116, the student must be registered as a full-time student in the district.
  • Parents should notify their child’s school as soon as they know that their student will be in need of either full-time or intermittent services.
  • The district must have a current medical certification from a licensed Physician indicating that a student will be out of school for a minimum of two consecutive weeks (10 days) or on an ongoing intermittent basis due to a medical condition.
  • If the Physician, Advanced Practice Nurse, or Physician Assistant writes the initial homebound certification for more than 9 weeks, the district requires that the Physician, Advanced Practice Nurse, or Physician Assistant completes another medical certification at least one week prior to the end of 9 weeks in order for tutoring to be continued.
  • For a student with an IEP, when a Physician, Advanced Practice Nurse, or Physician Assistant’s statement is received indicating the need for homebound tutoring, the IEP team must consider if an IEP meeting needs to be convened.
