Mrs. Forster's 1st grade hatches chicks!

During the months of March and April Mrs. Forster's class hatched chicks!  Using an incubator Mrs. Forster carefully monitored the eggs several times a day checking their temperature and rotating them as necessary.  On April 25th the first chicks began to hatch!  The chicks are a big hit in the first grade hallway. We will be sad to see them go but they will be off to the farm soon!

Fifth Grade students engage in Law Day!

On Monday April 25 the 5th graders participated in Law Day.  A lawyer taught the students about Miranda rights and what it means.  The students also participated in a mock trial, with the Wolf from the 3 Little Pigs.  The students learned about the parts of a courtroom and what different people do in a courtroom.

Ellis Garden! Check out our updates!

March, 2016

Today we planted the first seeds that will be going into our Ellis School Garden! Some of our 5th graders planted Banana Peppers, Bell Peppers, and Yummy Peppers. When we come back from Spring Break all of our classes will have an opportunity to plant some seeds for our garden.

Before our plants can go outside we will be growing them inside under the grow lights that the PTO purchased for our school. The plants will grow under the lights for about 6-8 weeks. On Field Day every classroom will get to plant their way plants in our school garden!

Update-March 29, 2016

Today our STEM students worked together to fill our garden beds with soil. DK Organics donated 12 yards of soil to fill our 6 raised garden beds! We cannot wait to start planting our seeds and seedlings in May!

Update-April 8, 2016

Our pepper plants are thriving! They have outgrown their seedling containers and have been transplanted into larger containers where their roots can get stronger. We are growing bell peppers, banana peppers, and yummy peppers!

Congratulations to the Ellis Talent Show Winners!

The 2016 Talent Show was a great success! Thank you to all the wonderful acts that participated and a special thank you to Mrs. Killam-Davis and Mrs. Breeden for helping to organize the event. We look forward to seeing the 1st place winner (Jersie) and 2nd place winners (Emiliano and Jaime) represent Ellis School at the district talent show event in April!

STEM students are enjoying science!

Our 3rd-5th grade STEM students are learning about all different types of things that grow. We are currently learning about Fungi and the positive and negative effects they have on our lives. Thanks to Sodexo we have been able to grow some Oyster Mushrooms of our own. The students have loved seeing how much the mushrooms have grown each day. Each day students have had the opportunity to see and feel the different parts of the mushroom (cap, gills, and stalk). Here are some pictures of our Oyster Mushrooms! Soon we will start growing plants to put in our Ellis School Garden.

2016-2017 School Calendar Released

Over the winter months, a recommendation is made to the Board of Education for the next school year’s calendar. The Board reviewed the proposed 2016-2017 school calendar at their meeting in early January and approved it on January 25, 2016.

Please note the following points:

  • The start of school is scheduled for Monday, August 22, 2016. This is a little later than normal and will help to accommodate the construction project timeline needs for the 2016 summer.
  • Three 2-hour late start dates have been scheduled for students on Tuesday, September 6; Tuesday, October 11; and Monday, November 14. These late starts will provide for additional professional development for staff. The two-hour late start for students will mirror the November 10 schedule this year. Late-start schedules can be viewed at www.rlas-116.org.
  • Winter Break for students will be Thursday, December 22, 2016 through Tuesday, January 3, 2017.
  • The last day of school (if no emergency days are used) is scheduled for Wednesday, May 31, 2017.

We understand that this calendar is a bit different than prior years and wanted to be sure that we communicated this information to our families as soon as possible.
If you have any questions regarding this information, please do not hesitate to contact your school office.
