Explorer Club 116 Participates in First-Annual John G. Shedd Aquarium Robotics Challenge
Team Recognized by RLAS-116 Board of Education

Round Lake, Illinois (08/23/2015) — The Round Lake Area Schools CUSD #116 Board of Education spent some time during their August 17, 2015 meeting to recognize a group of young engineers!

In May, the Explorer Club 116 participated in an Aerial Robotics Challenge, which resulted in a first place for poster presentation and second place in the overall competition, only following the Illinois Math & Science Academy!

Exploring is geared toward career exploration with a vision to provide positive and meaningful real-world career experiences and leadership development opportunities for all teenagers and young adults in their chosen field of interest.

Explorer Club 116 was formed in September 2014 by a group of middle school students with an interest in flying quadcopters.  Some of the parents were part of Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee and Parent Advisory Committee that met on Friday evenings at Magee Middle School.  The members were in 6-8 grades with varied academic backgrounds.

What's New With State Standardized Assessments?

There have been several significant changes for state standardized testing this year.
The most notable change is the addition of a science test to be taken by select students in the state of Illinois.  While details have yet to be finalized, we do have some preliminary information.  The science test, as aligned to Next Generation Science Standards, will be given to 5th, 8th and 10th graders.  A testing date/window has not been established yet but the test will occur sometime in the spring.  The exam will be online and testing time should take 90 minutes or less.
PARCC testing in the state of Illinois will look a little bit different this year.   Last year there were 2 testing windows, a Performance Based Assessment (PBA) window and an End of Year Assessment (EOY) window.  This year the state has consolidated the two tests into a singular testing window that will be 30 days and will extend from when approximately 75 percent of the school year is complete to the 90 percent mark.  The earliest the test will be made available through Pearson Access Next is March 7.  Another change was to reduce the number of test units from eight or nine, depending on grade level, to six or seven. This will result in a reduction of testing time for most students by 90 minutes.

We will continue to provide updates as they become available. If you have specific questions regarding this information, please contact your school administrative team.
