Course Title: CONSUMER EDUCATION

Education Program (IEP)

Students work with basic concepts of consumerism. They become familiar with renting, credit (uses and misuses), insurance, investment and savings. The text used is supplemented by a semi-realistic project incorporating all concepts taught. Amount of homework required: Approximately two to four hours per week

Course Title: HEALTH

Units covered include nutrition, mental health, drugs/alcohol/tobacco, sexuality, disease, safety and first aid. Amount of homework required: Approximately three hours per week

Course Title: QUEST

Education Program (IEP)

Quest is a course designed for students to learn skills necessary for effective living. Students explore and discuss areas concerning self, self-concept, feelings, attitudes, friendship, and family. Classroom activities involve and promote the following skills: thinking, feeling, decision making, problem-solving, communicating, and acting upon decisions. Amount of homework required: None

Course Title: CAREER PLANNING
Grade: 9/2
nd sem, 10/1st sem Length: Semester Credit: .50 Fee: None

: Placement by Individual Education Program (IEP)

The career planning course will guide student though various activities that help students with developing their IEP Transition plan. Students will develop post secondary goals and outcomes. They will take several assessments including career interest surveys and a practice ACT. Students will also conduct hands-on research into possible career areas. Amount of homework required: Minimal as most work is done in class on computers

PLEASE NOTE: along with LD and BD classes, the school offers a Career Opportunities Program (COP and LD/COP). This program is a special education program offered to Round Lake High School students. The curriculum teaches independent living skills, while meeting the Round Lake High School graduation requirements. The special education team, consisting of the student, parents, teachers and support staff, at the student’s Annual Review, determines placement in the program.

 

English

Course Title: ENGLISH 1

English I is a year-long course devoted to the study of grammar, writing skills, reading skills, and literary forms. Students will study literature including the short story, poetry, nonfiction, novels, and drama. Amount of homework required: One to two hours per week

Students work on sharpening skills in writing, reading, thinking, and speaking skills. Students study various literary forms such as short stories, novels, drama, nonfiction, folklore, and poetry. A variety of writing assignments with an emphasis on literary analysis are completed. Amount of homework required: One to two hour per week

Course Title: ENGLISH 3

English 3 is a full year course devoted to the study of the works written by American authors from the Puritan through the modern era. The course examines the various genres, techniques, and periods of American literature. In addition, students will study vocabulary, sentence structure, and will write various literary analysis papers. Amount of homework required: One to two hours per week

Course Title: ENGLISH 4

Prerequisite: English 1, 2, 3 - Placement by Individual Education Program (
IEP)

Students learn to write letters of application and to understand classified ads. Reading newspaper articles, mystery stories, and other high interest stories is an essential part of this course. The student’s reading comprehension is developed by reading several short stories and two classic novels. Grammar is emphasized through written work and assigned exercises from a grammar book. Weekly spelling tests provide constant development of spelling skills. One speech is required during the year. Amount of homework required: One to two hours per week


Course Title: READING INTERVENTIONS

Program (IEP)

Reading Lab is a course that offers students the opportunity to build basic decoding and encoding skills. Using the Wilson Reading Program, the course builds basic phonetic awareness, use of phonics, then into reading fluency. This course may be taken repeatedly as stated in the IEP. Amount of homework required: There is one take home assignment each week.

 

Math

Course Title: MATH INTERVENTIONS
Grade: 9 Length: Year Credit: 1 (Elective) Fee: None
Prerequisite: Placement by Individual Education Program (IEP)

Students will improve their skills in basic math computation. The course is completely individualized. The skills covered are: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and Pre- Algebra. This course counts as an elective credit and is taken in conjunction with another math course. Amount of homework required: One to two hours per week


Course Title: ALGEBRA FUNDEMENTALS
Grade: 10-12 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Placement by Individual Education Program (IEP)

This course will mirror the core content of the current Algebra 1 curriculum, however, move at a slightly reduced pace in a smaller classroom setting. Students will receive the same assignments and individualized instruction will be provided during class. Amount of homework required: One to two hours per week


Course Title: MATH 3 Grade: 10-12 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Placement by Individualized Education Program(IEP)

Students apply skills of basic math to ‘real life’ situations. The focus is on applying math skills to a variety of independent living situations. The students are given the same assignments; individualized instruction is provided during class. Amount of homework required: One to two hours per week.

 

Course Title: TY (TWO-YEAR) ALGEBRA PARTS I AND II
Grade: 10-12 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Placement by Case Manager and Individual Education Program (IEP)

This course is a four-semester course. It is designed to teach one year of algebra over a two-year period. It introduces basic concepts of algebra and their application in word problems. Amount of homework required: One to two hours per week


Course Title: TY (TWO-YEAR) ALGEBRA PART III AND IV
Grade: 10-12 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fee: None
Prerequisite: TY Algebra Part I and Placement by Case Manager and Individual Education Program (IEP)

This course is the second year of TY Algebra. This class continues with basic concepts of algebra. Topics covered in this course include solving equations, operations with polynomials, and systems of equations. Amount of homework required: One to two hours per week

 

Science

Course Title: GENERAL SCIENCE
Grade: 9-12 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Placement by Individual Education Program (IEP)

This course is designed for the student who needs a more individualized approach to learning scientific concepts. Course content includes the study of the following topics: physics, chemistry, and earth science. Classroom activities consist of textbook work, skill-sheet handouts, laboratories, and demonstrations. Amount of homework required: Two to three hours per week


Course Title: BIOLOGY
Grade: 10-12 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fee: None
Prerequisite: General Science and Placement by Individualized Education Program (IEP)

This course is designed for the student who needs a more individualized approach to the study of Biology. The fundamentals of biology are studied including cells, basic biochemistry, evolution, genetics, ecology, and the major groups of living things. Amount of homework required: Two hours per week

 

Social Studies

Course Title: UNITED STATES HISTORY
Grade: 11 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Placement by Individual Education Program (IEP)

Students cover topics in United States history from exploration to present day. Map skills are also stressed. Emphasis is placed on major events in U.S. history. Students are required to write one report during the year. Amount of homework required: Two hours per week


Course Title: GOVERNMENT
Grade: 11 Length: Semester Credit: 1 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Placement by Individual Education Program (IEP)

Students study how government developed, what is needed in a government, and the different types of governments with an in-depth study of each branch of government: legislative, executive, and judicial. All activities and lectures are tied to modern times and the federal and state constitutions. Amount of homework required: Two hours per week

Course Title: GEOGRAPHY
Grade: 10 Length: Semester Credit: 1 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Placement by Individual Education Program (IEP)

Students study the five themes in geography, along with map skills, latitude, longitude, land forms, climate, continents, bodies of water, atmosphere, weather, and the solar system. The focus of the course is on the different United States’ regions. Amount of homework required: One hour per week


Course Title: WORLD HISTORY
Grade: 9 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Placement by Individual Education Program (IEP)

World History I expresses a historical appreciation via the analysis of cultural, social, political, economical, technological, religious and intellectual trends and events. The class will start out with Paleolithic and Neolithic Ages and will end up with the Modern Age. Assessments will include tests, power-point presentations, differentiated projects and homework. Amount of homework required: One to two hours per week
