Curriculum

FRENCH

Course Title: FRENCH I
Grade: 9-12 Length: Year Credit: 1
Prerequisite: ‘C’ average or higher in English

This course is an introduction to the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. The course offers students a substantial vocabulary and sufficient grammar skills to ask for information and to carry on a basic conversation. The French culture is presented through videos, discussions, and the text.

Course Title: FRENCH II
Grade: 10-12 Length: Year Credit: 1
Prerequisite: ‘C’ average or higher in French I

Upon completion of this course, students should have a good background in the French language as well as the culture. The course includes the study of grammar, conversation, and the reading of short articles and cultural materials. An emphasis on grammar, conversation, and vocabulary for everyday communication is stressed.

Course Title: FRENCH III HONORS
Grade: 11-12 Length: Year Credit: 1
Prerequisite: ‘B’ average or higher in French II

This course emphasizes a more advanced study of grammar. Writing and speaking skills are stressed to enhance the student’s conversational ability. The student is introduced to more advanced literature. The student is expected to read and discuss short stories and cultural articles as well as an elementary novel.

Course Title: FRENCH IV HONORS
Grade: 12 Length: Year Credit: 1
Prerequisite: ‘B’ average or higher in French III Honors

This course is designed to provide the student with an in-depth study of French culture, history and literature. A brief review of grammar is included. Writing and speaking skills and vocabulary development are stressed as well as the study of more advanced grammar.


SPANISH

Course Title: SPANISH I
Grade: 9-12 Length: Year Credit: 1
Prerequisite: ‘C’ average or higher in English

Spanish I is intended for students interested in the people, language, and culture of Latin countries. Students learn a foreign language through the development of four basic skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. At the end of a semester’s time, each student should show development in these four areas. Students are evaluated through their written and oral work.

Course Title: SPANISH II
Grade: 9-12 Length: Year Credit: 1
Prerequisite: ‘C’ average or higher in Spanish I

In Spanish II, the four basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening are reinforced. There is a continuation of the study of grammar that is applicable to all four areas. Short stories are read and discussed; oral presentations focus on conversational situations. Spanish culture is explored through dialogues, short stories, and paragraphs. Vocabulary development is stressed.

Course Title: SPANISH III
Grade: 10-12 Length: Year Credit: 1
Prerequisite: ‘C’ average or higher in Spanish II or teacher approval

Students will be immersed in the Spanish language. They will practice speaking and listening to directions in Spanish daily. They will also study in depth grammar, customs, culture, literature and history of the Spanish-speaking world. Requirements: maintain a C or higher in the class.

Course Title: SPANISH III HONORS
Grade: 10-12 Length: Year Credit: 1
Prerequisite: ‘B’ average or higher in Spanish II and teacher approval

Students will be immersed in the Spanish language. They will practice speaking and listening to directions in Spanish daily. They will also study in depth grammar, customs, culture, literature and history of the Spanish-speaking world. Requirements: maintain an A or B in the class.

Course Title: SPANISH IV
Grade: 11-12 Length: Year Credit: 1
Prerequisite: ‘C average or higher in Spanish III or teacher approval

Students will review grammar and vocabulary from the previous year. Students will be immersed in the Spanish language. Spanish will be used daily in class through instructions and conversations. Students will write compositions and do oral presentations. They will also study the history, geography and art of the Spanish speaking world. Requirements: maintain a C or higher in the class

Course Title: SPANISH IV HONORS
Grade: 12 Length: Year Credit: 1
Prerequisite: ‘B’ average or higher in Spanish III or Spanish III Honors and teacher approval

Students will review grammar and vocabulary from the previous year. Students will be immersed in the Spanish language. Spanish will be used daily in class through instructions and conversations. Students will write compositions and do oral presentations. They will also study the history, geography and art of the Spanish speaking world. Requirements: maintain an A or B in the class.

Course Title: SPANISH FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS 1
Grade: 9-12 Length: Year Credit: 1
Prerequisite: Placement by assessment

This course introduces the native Spanish speaker to the mechanics of the language through reading, writing and grammar study. The history and culture of Hispanic countries will also be studied. The course will be conducted primarily in Spanish.

Course Title: SPANISH FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS 2
Grade: 9-12 Length: Year Credit: 1
Prerequisite: Spanish for Native Speakers 1 and teacher recommendation through student assessment

This course is a continuance of Spanish for Native Speakers 1. The history and culture of the Hispanic people around the world will be studied. In addition, students will study literature as well as renowned Hispanic artists and their work. Emphasis is place on writing skills throughout the year. The course will be conducted primarily in Spanish.

Course Title: ADVANCED PLACEMENT SPANISH LANGUAGE
Grade: 12 Length: Year Credit: 1
Prerequisite: teacher recommendation

Students will receive extensive education in the 4 domains of language: reading, writing, speaking, and listening in preparation for the Advanced Placement Spanish Language exam. There will be a rigorous review of grammar and the use of grammar that they have learned in their previous tracks of study, i.e. Spanish 1-4, or Spanish Native 1, Native 2 and Spanish 4. Students will be exposed to current events in Spanish speaking countries, history, literature using authentic text, and authentic audio and video recordings presented in Spanish. These will be topics for discussion in class in the target language. Students are expected to converse and write about topics explored in class with native-like control, fluency, and accuracy. The class will be conducted entirely in Spanish, with rare exceptions. Students in this course will be required to take the AP exam. This is a college-level course. Advanced Placement language courses simulate college level Spanish classes, and students have the opportunity to earn college credit by taking the exam.
