Art

Course Title: ART FUNDAMENTALS I
Grade: 9-12 Length: Semester Credit: .50 Fee: None
Prerequisite: None

Art fundamentals will cover the art basics. We will learn about the principles and elements of art (line, shape, texture, space, form, color, rhythm, balance, unity, contrast, emphasis, movement and pattern) while exploring art techniques like drawing, painting, sculpting, ceramics and printmaking. This course teaches about contemporary art as well as art history, careers in art and art criticism. After completing this course you will have a decent foundation for art, then you can decide whether you want to take another art course or just use your knowledge for everyday living.


Course Title: ART FUNDAMENTALS II
Grade: 9-12 Length: Semester Credit: .50 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals I

Art Fundamentals II will continue with the art basics; Learning about the principles and elements of art and using them more in depth with techniques that we learned in Art Fundamentals I. This course offers a deeper use of techniques like drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpting and ceramics. We will explore more deeply the different styles of art and art periods. Students will learn to critique their own art as well as professional art and learn about career possibilities. After successfully completing this course you will have a strong foundation for art that you will be able to apply to future advanced art courses and other life experiences.


Course Title: CERAMICS I
Grade: 9-12 Length: Semester Credit: .50 Fee: None
Prerequisite: None

This course will introduce students to clay properties, proper firing temperatures, different firing techniques, glazing and methods for building with clay. We will learn about different periods in history that were strongly influenced by ceramics and pottery. Students will explore the century old controversy of art versus craft and the differences between the two. Students will learn about contemporary and historic styles of ceramics and how ceramics has evolved over time. After successfully completing this course, students will have the knowledge to build with clay, fire clay, glaze properly and use problem-solving steps that they have learned while building with clay throughout the semester.


Course Title: CERAMICS II
Grade: 9-12 Length: Semester Credit: .50 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Ceramics I

This course will offer a more advanced look at clay properties, firing and glazing techniques. Students will learn traditional and nontraditional surface decoration while techniques. Students will using slab and coil building techniques that were learned in Ceramics I. Students will also learn wheel-throwing techniques for pottery and sculpture creating. Students will take a look into the history of teapots from various cultures all over the world and continue to explore the art versus craft controversy. After successfully completing this course students will take the knowledge they have gained and can continue with ceramics, sculpture or apply the problem solving techniques that they have learned to real life situations.


Course Title: ART AND TECHNOLOGY
Grade: 10-12 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals I and Art Fundamentals II

This course is designed to introduce students to digital art through the use of digital and video media. Classroom activities will explore concepts of art in inventive ways and build skills in Web design, animation, digital video and photography practice. Students will expand and apply their knowledge of the elements and principles of art and color theory in project based assignments using a variety of digital media. Students will learn and produce creative works employing research, sharing multiple interpretations, and will be introduced to different careers in digital art that exist


Course Title: DRAWING I
Grade: 10-12 Length: Semester Credit: .50 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals I & II

This curriculum includes teaching the elements of art (line, shape, color, texture, space, and form), and the principles of design. Students are exposed to the work of important artists from past to present. Students demonstrate mastery of drawing using a variety of art media and techniques, subject matters, and media, including pencil, ink, charcoal, pastels, markers, crayons, and mixed media. This course is designed for those students who want to improve their basic drawing skills and learn new ones, as well as improve their ability to think creatively.


Course Title: DRAWING II
Grade: 10-12 Length: Semester Credit: .50 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals I, Art Fundamentals II, and Drawing I

This course provides art students an opportunity to explore advanced drawing techniques. The curriculum encourages the development of students’ personal style, and continued development of their portfolio. Students are encouraged to work in their own area of interest, develop thematic artwork, and pursue in-depth exploration of a variety of drawing media.


Course Title: PAINTING I
Grade: 10-12 Length: Semester Credit: .50 Fee: None
Prerequisite
: Art Fundamentals I, Art Fundamentals II, and Drawing I

Students use a variety of painting mediums and techniques to express their ideas following the study of major art movements and artists throughout history. Students build upon prior knowledge of art elements and design principles. Painting techniques and materials include watercolors, oil pastel, tempera painting, and acrylic painting. Students will continue to build their portfolios as a result of this course.


Course Title: SCULPTURE
Grade: 10-12 Length: Semester Credit: .50 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals I and Art Fundamentals II

Students will work with a wide variety of mediums to create three-dimensional forms. Elements and principles of design will be emphasized, along with art history and multi-cultural art education.


Course Title: ADVANCED DRAWING AND PAINTING
Grade: 11-12 Length: Semester Credit: .50 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals I, Art Fundamentals II, Drawing I, and Painting I

This advanced course is designed for those students interested in learning advanced drawing and painting techniques, and portfolio preparation. Watercolor, acrylic, and oil painting techniques are included in the curriculum. Students are encouraged to work independently within a thematic framework, exploring various media and advanced techniques.

 

Course Title: AP STUDIO ART
Grades: 11-12 Length: Full year Credit: .05 Fee: None
The students will have summer work that they must complete.
Prerequisite: Must be Teacher approved

Advanced Placement Studio Art will be a college accredited course where students will create a portfolio during the course of the year that will be sent in to the AP Art board for evaluation. Students that receive a 3, 4 or 5 on the completion and evaluation of their portfolios will receive college credit for one course. Students will work on a portfolio that contains one of three possible portfolios: drawing, 2-D design and 3-D design. The portfolios share a basic, three-section structure, which requires the student to show a fundamental competence and range of understanding in visual concerns and methods. Each of the portfolios asks the student to demonstrate a depth of investigation and process of discovery through the Concentration (II) section. In the Breadth (III) section the student is asked to demonstrate a serious grounding in visual principles and material techniques. The Quality (I) section permits the student to select the works that best exhibit a synthesis of form, technique and content.

Course Title: ADVANCED CERAMICS
Grades:10-12 Length: Semester Credit: .05 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Ceramics I and II

Advanced Ceramics will offer students a more advanced look into clay properties, firing, and glazing techniques. Students will further investigate several traditional and nontraditional hand-building techniques including slab and coil, but will also learn wheel-throwing techniques for pottery and sculpture creation. Students will also learn to use an extruder and pug mill to create sculptures and recycle clay. Students will explore the history of functional ceramics from various cultures and continue the controversial debate of art versus craft. After successful completion of this course, students may apply the knowledge and problem solving techniques they have gained to sculpture, collegiate level ceramics, or real life situations. This course will also prepare them for the portfolio based AP Studio Art: 3-D Design.



MUSIC

Course Title: RENAISSANCE TO RAP (GENERAL MUSIC OFFERING)
Grade: 9-12 Length: 1 semester Credit: .50 Fees: None
Prerequisite: None 

A non-performance based music course open to all students. This is a survey style course exploring a diverse range of musical styles from several cultures. Discussion will include the history of western music to present day and the impact music has had on society. Any student who wants to learn more about music and its background would benefit from this course.


Band

Course Title: CONCERT/MARCHING BAND
Grade: 9-12 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fees:
Registration Fee required by district ($50), Supply Fee ($25) required by
instructor, Instrument Rental ($50 – if needed), Uniform accessories and instrument supplies as needed.
Prerequisite
: Minimum of one year of instruction on a wind instrument

Enrollment in this ensemble is based on the approval of the director. Focus is on musical literature written for traditional wind band and the fundamentals of musicianship including tone production, intonation, rhythmic independence, sight reading, fundamentals of music theory, and listening skills. During the fall, students enrolled in this ensemble will also participate in Marching Band. Marching Band is a co-curricular activity and is included in the course grade. The Marching Band performs at home football games, school events, and marching competitions. This group has a busy rehearsal and performance schedule including a summer camp and after school and weekend commitments in which students are required to attend. Beginning in the late fall, the Concert Band performs at concerts, festivals, and solo and ensemble contest. Because of the performance nature of this course, students are required to attend practices and performances outside of the school day. The band will also travel to clinics and perform at the local middle and elementary schools.

 

Course Title: PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE
Grade: 9-12 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fees:

instructor, Instrument Rental ($50 – if needed), Uniform accessories and instrument supplies as needed.
Prerequisite: Approval of Director

Composed of percussion instruments. Focus is on musical literature written specifically for percussion instruments and the fundamentals of playing technique including the study of snare drum, timpani, keyboards, and auxiliary percussion. During the fall, students enrolled in this ensemble will also participate in Marching Band. Marching Band is a co-curricular activity and is included in the course grade. The Marching Band performs at home football games, parades, and school events. This group has a busy rehearsal and performance schedule including a summer camp and after school and weekend commitments in which students are required to attend. After Marching Band, this ensemble becomes an independent “drum line” focusing on indoor concert performance. Because of the performance nature of this course, students are required to attend practices and performances outside the school day. The drum line performs at concerts, clinics, festivals, and some home basketball games.

 

Course Title: BEGINNING BAND

Prerequisite: None

Enrollment is open to all students who want to learn how to play a wind instrument. Students will learn how to read music, basic history of music, music theory, the physical elements of playing an instrument, and how to play in an ensemble. Beginning Band performs at the spring and end of year concerts. Students who complete Beginning Band successfully will be invited to join Concert Band the following year.

 



Choir 

Course Title: TREBLE CHOIR
Grade: 9-12 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fee: $25.00
Prerequisite: None

This choral ensemble is a non-auditioned group for beginning female singers. Music from a wide variety of styles and periods is studied, as well as a variety of foreign languages explored and performed. Fundamentals of singing and musicianship are taught, including tone production, part-singing, sight-reading, intonation, diction, and music theory. All of these skills are incorporated in performances that include school and community concerts, festivals, and solo and ensemble contests. Credit applies toward graduation.

Course Title: CONCERT CHOIR
Grade: 9-12 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fee: $25.00
Prerequisite: Treble Choir or Bass Choir (when it becomes available)

This choral ensemble is a non-auditioned group, made up of both girls and boys. Music from a wide variety of styles and periods is studied, as well as a variety of foreign languages explored and performed. Fundamentals of singing and musicianship are taught, including tone production, part-singing, sight-reading, intonation, diction, and music theory. All of these skills are incorporated in performances that include school and community concerts, festivals, and solo and ensemble contests. Teacher consent is required to maintain a proper balance between boys’ and girls’ sections. Credit applies toward graduation.

Course Title: WOMEN’S ENSEMBLE
Grade: 9-12 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fee: $25.00
Prerequisite: Audition only

This small (16-24), select choir of female singers sings traditionally and classically based choral literature of varied styles, time periods, and languages. Members are chosen on the basis of overall musicianship, sight-reading, ability, and attitude. Students spend the majority of their time preparing for school and community concerts, festivals, choral competitions, and solo and ensemble contests. Small tours may also be arranged for this ensemble. Students also learn in-depth music theory and sight-reading skills to enhance their level of musicianship, knowledge, and technique. Credit applies toward graduation.

Course Title: PANTHER VOICES
Grade: 9-12 Length: Year Credit: 1 Fee: $25.00
Prerequisite: Audition only

This small (16-24), select choir of male and female singers is the premiere ensemble at RLHS. Members are chosen carefully on the basis of overall musicianship, sight-reading, ability, and attitude. This ensemble sings traditionally and classically based choral literature of varied styles, time periods, and languages. Time is spent in preparation for school and community concerts, festivals, choral competitions, and solo and ensemble contests. Small tours may also be arranged for this ensemble. Students also learn in-depth music theory and sight-singing skills to enhance their level of musicianship, knowledge, and technique. Credit applies toward graduation.

NOTE: Students may NOT take more than two vocal music classes during any semester.

 


Drama

Course Title: DRAMA I
Grade: 9-12 Length: Semester Credit: .50 Fee: None
Prerequisite: None

Drama 1 is a semester long course where students will gain knowledge and appreciation of themselves as individuals and performers. This course has been developed to introduce them to the art of theater and to show the many varying aspects of it. This semester students will be exposed to wide range of theatrical elements such as acting, play analysis, technical theatre, theatre history and improvisation.

Course Title: DRAMA II
Grade: 9-12 Length: Semester Credit: .50 Fee: None
Prerequisite: Drama 1

Drama 2 is a semester long course that would take the information learned in Drama 1 and build no that knowledge. Drama 2 covers more and goes into more depth with play analysis, acting, technical theatre and directing. Ideally, this

class would be taken the spring semester, after students have finished Drama
