Welcome to 1st Grade! My name is Jessica Conti and I have been a first grade teacher at Ellis School since 2005. I received my degree in education from Northern Illinois University and also received an endorsement to teach English Language Learners through the University of Illinois. Aside from being a teacher I am also a mother to 2 great boys! Jordan will be entering high school this year as a freshman and Nathan will be a 4th grader! As you probably know, being a parent keeps you on your toes! When I am not at Ellis School you can often find me watching Jordan play football or cheering Nathan on at the baseball field!
This year you can expect your child to learn many things! We have a strong emphasis on reading and we will work hard to use strategies at home and at school to improve our reading and create a love for books! In math we will learn skills such as addition, subtraction, measurement, counting, and much more. Science and Social Studies are always fun in 1st grade and cover a variety of topics. You can expect your student to be respectful, responsible, and safe while in the Ellis community.
This year I am extremely excited to be using alternative seating in the classroom. This means that each student will have the choice of what type of seat they would like to sit in each day. (chair, stability ball, flexible stool, standing desk, etc.) Studies have shown that allowing students choice and the opportunity for controlled movement this increases their attention span and focus encouraging positive behaviors! In addition to our seating, I enjoy using the class dojo to help motivate the students to be the best they can be! Parents will be provided with access to login and see how your child is doing throughout the day and send me a message if you have any questions.
I welcome your feedback and help in the classroom. Please feel free to reach me with any questions, concerns, or comments. Student success will occur by working TOGETHER! I encourage you to read at home with your child every day. This little bit of help goes a long way in your child's journey to become a fluent reader! (They will enjoy the time they spend with you as well:)
I look forward to an amazing year with you and your family!
