School Plan
W.J. Murphy Elementary School has made Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) since the inception of the federal No Child Left Behind act, up until the '04-'05 school year, when AYP was not met in the area of Special Education. Our school has experienced success in the following areas according to ISAT results:
- Murphy is the top performing school in ISAT Reading Grade 3, with 56.9% meeting/exceeding standards.
- Murphy is the top performing school in ISAT Math Grade 3, with an impressive 83% of students meeting/exceeding standards.
- Murphy 4th graders saw a meet/exceed rate of 68.7% on the Science ISAT exam
- Murphy 5th graders performed above District and State averages on ISAT Reading with a 61.2%.
- Murphy 5th graders also perfomed well above State average on ISAT Math by nearly 8 percent with an astounding 81%
Teachers at Murphy are involved in activities and School Improvement initiatives with the improvement of teaching reading as an end goal. Teachers are going to workshops that are reading based, and bringing that knowledge back to the staff to share with other teachers. Also, Murphy Elementary will be involved in the following:
- Murphy School is committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure the academic excellence of all learners
- Murphy School will take a stance toward reading improvement.
- Individual teachers provide one-on-one assistance with their students.
- Regular education and special education teachers continue to work collaboratively to integrate classroom settings.
- Classroom teachers, School Improvement Team, and administration meet continually to discuss and analyze results of the ISAT results.
- Teachers will take part in many professional growth offerings, including on-site workshops in Extended Response provided by the Lake County ROE.
- Open Court Reading series continues to be used as the Core Reading Program for 1st grade teachers, with the Harcourt Trophies reading program being used by 2nd through 6th grade teachers.
- D.A.R.E., Character Counts, and the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program continue this year.
- Murphy Student Council will continue to be extremely active in providing all manner of activity and school spirit (Food Drive, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son outing, etc.).
- Quarterly Honor Roll Breakfasts will continue to celebrate the academic accomplishments of our students.
- Murphy 1st through 3rd grade students are tested using the DIBELS diagnostic assessment.
- The fourth through sixth grade students will participate in a School Spelling Bee.
- Monthly principal newsletters (The Murphy Messenger) are distributed to students, parents, and staff, and is translated into Spanish for our Spanish speaking community. Monthly reading newsletters also go home to parents (“Building Readers”).
- The PTO continues to hold monthly meetings and provide opportunities for Murphy School students. Activities sponsored by the PTO include Family Movie Night, Market Day, regular "Benefit Nights" at local restaurants, and a yearly Spirit Wear sale.
- Murphy 4th grade students once again will participate in the community Job Shadow Day with local officials.
- A positive relationship will continue between Murphy School, the law enforcement department, and the local newspapers.
