ACCELERATED READER

Some classrooms at Murphy participate in a software program called Accelerated Reader. Students read a book and take a quiz on the computer and accumulate points to earn ‘dog tags’ reflecting how many points they have reached. The tags range from 5 points (for first graders) and then are in increments of 10 up to 100. Each tag is a different color and handed out during their library time so the whole class can hear their fellow student being cheered. Competition is fierce in two of our 6th grade classrooms and they are always comparing classroom scores on the chart that is displayed in the library.

Library Rules and Regulations
Students are responsible for any lost or damaged books and will be charged the current book price whether the book is new or old since we have to pay current charges to replace lost books. A flat $7.00 fee is owed for any lost paperback books. If the barcode is removed from the book it is a $1.00 fee.

Most damage occurs because of eating and drinking around their library book, please discourage children from doing this and stress that there will be fines assessed for any damage. If they take their books home they need to know where they are at all times and should be careful that little brothers and sisters, cats and dogs do not damage them in any way.

Our wonderful student council has many fundraising events where they sell candy or taffy apples, etc., these items are not allowed in the library. Sticky fingers and library books do not go well together and it was sad seeing how many lollipop sticks and candy wrappers were on the floor.

Books are checked out in 2 week periods with 1st grade checking out one book and all other grades checking out 2 books. As always, if there is an early dismissal or a day off on your library day, I will try my best to reschedule classes. I will do this for school assemblies as well, unfortunately it does not always work to everyone’s advantage.

If books are forgotten on the due date the fine is 5 cents a day for each book for each day. We do not charge for weekends.
