Special Services

The state of Illinois and the federal government require that all schools in Illinois provide instruction and support services for all students with disabilities.

District 116 employs Special Service personnel including: social workers, school psychologists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, speech and language therapists, special education teachers and program assistants. Additionally, interpreters for the hearing impaired can be arranged through the building principal for school-related activities.

The special Service staff provide a variety of services including:

  1. Diagnostic testing
  2. Direct instruction to students
  3. Individual and group counseling
  4. Speech and language
  5. Occupational and physical therapy
  6. Consultation to general education classroom teachers
  7. Consultation to parents

District 116 provides resources and instructional programs to students with learning disabilities and behavior disorders. Programs and services for students with physical disabilities, visual impairments, hearing impairments, mental impairments and develop- mental delays are provided in cooperation with the Special Education District of Lake County (SEDOL).

District 116 also conducts preschool screening for children three years older. This screening program provides for early identification of children who have special needs. Early intervention services for children ages 0-3 are provided in cooperation with SEDOL.

Unless District 116 is in receipt of a court order to the contrary, District 116 will provide copies of correspondence and/or reports to the non-custodial parents. The custodial parent will be notified of this action.
