SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN

Raymond S. Ellis Elementary School is the largest Grade 1 – 6 building in Round Lake Unit District 116 and has the most diversified student population. We are currently under the restrictions of School Choice by the State of Illinois for failing to meet all Adequate Yearly Progress targets for the past two years. Under the guidelines of No Child Left Behind legislation, we have disaggregated groups of Hispanic, White non-Hispanic, Low-Income, English Language Learners, and Special Education. Despite the number of benchmarks we must achieve, we have failed to meet only one each of those years; in 2003-2004, ELL in reading, and in 2004-2005, Special Education students in reading. More detailed information is available on the school report card site. We continue to work toward providing a high quality of instruction for all students, but one which gives special attention to those students most in need.

To that end, our SIP Team has established goals in Reading, Writing across the curriculum, and Mathematics. We are currently in the final preparation and approval stage of a three-year plan that will serve as a guiding, yet flexible plan for school years 2005 – 2008.

Reading activities include:
Ø       Including flexible grouping and guided reading practices in all classrooms
Ø       Incorporating a Four Block model of instruction and stressing literary fluency
Ø       Challenging our teachers and students to use higher-level thinking skills
Ø       Developing extended responses that are taught as a supplement to our basal series
Ø       Acquiring and using non-fiction co-curricular leveled reading materials
Ø       Introducing Read 180, an all-inclusive computer-based program for intermediate students most in need

Writing across the curriculum activities include:
Ø       Integrating technology as a resource of information and as means to report it
Ø       Writing for a variety of purposes (expository, persuasive, and narrative)
Ø       Quarterly all-building writing prompts which are monitored for vertical growth
Ø       Using the Four Square model for organization at the earlier grades and incorporating the tenets of Trait Writing at the intermediate level
Ø       Using dictionaries and thesauri to improve student writing and word choice
Ø       Applying for a Technology Grant to begin to bring Ellis into the 21st Century

Math activities include:
Ø       Increasing the use of manipulatives in math instruction
Ø       Increasing the use of calculators for higher level reasoning problems in grades 4 – 6
Ø       Monthly grade-level and quarterly all-building math prompts which stress the state extended response model and are monitored for vertical growth

In all areas, teachers are receiving on-going staff development training through the Lake County Regional Office of Education. Our special thanks go to Mindy Pudlo, Reading Consultant, Vicki Gifford, Mathematics Consultant, and Dr. Jerry VanPelt, Director of the Educational Service Center, for the time and concern they have given to Ellis Elementary School.

We are also proud to be deeply involved in the District 116 Character Counts Initiative and have many classrooms receiving extra support through the Nicasa Life Skills classes and the GAP Program for sixth graders. Both of these programs promote positive choices – skills we know our students will need as they leave us to pursue their future dreams and desires.

We are strongly committed to improving communication among our teachers, our students, our parents, and the community. Regular grading updates, monthly principal’s newsletters, and quarterly academic newsletters help our parents keep abreast of what’s happening at Ellis.

Our Parent Teacher Association also communicates regularly with parents and encourages them to be active in our school. Hopefully, more parents will become active in this essential group.
