Congratulations to RLAS-116 parent, Merced Alfaro, for being honored with the YWCA Lake County Women of Achievement Education Award!
Merced graduated high school in Mexico, but her parents couldn't afford to enroll her in college courses. Alfar married and immigrated to the U.S. where she dedicated herself to her role as a wife and mother to three children.
When her youngest daughter began to struggle in school, Merced volunteered to help out in the classroom. She quickly found herself becoming more involved in the community, volunteering at Family Services, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Boy Scouts, Manjarres & Associates and Round Lake Soccer League.
Merced joined the Round Lake Area School District Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (BPAC) in 2007. For eleven years, she donated her time and talents for the benefit of all children in the Round Lake district. Today, Merced works with other BPAC parents to plan and organize parents' seminars on topics like "How to Help Your Child Succeed in School," "College is Possible" and "Bullying." Prior to each seminar, she conducts community outreach, educating other parents on the importance of being involved in their children's education and inviting them to attend free BPAC seminars.
We are proud to present Merced Alfaro with a Women of Achievement Award for her strong and lasting commitment to education.
