Panther Health and Wellness (PHW) was designed to encourage students to be active and healthy through physical fitness and nutrition. PHW allows students to improve their physical fitness and strength and is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm. PHW is a coed program that accommodates varying levels of fitness and is a combination of strength training, cardiovascular and interval training to maximize students’ physical fitness. I am hoping to continue this program and replace worn and broken equipment from last year through the generous grant program Trustmark offers. We are hoping to increase participation by offering transportation for students involved in the after school program.
 
Students monitor weight, BMI, fitness, and strength by journaling. Students note modifications that were made to the work out and how they are feeling before, during and after a work out. PHW also focuses on proper nutrition to aide in muscle recovery before and after workouts. Students also keep food journals to reinforce healthy eating habits for overall lifelong health.
 
Students will participate in a group warm up that is appropriate to the work out of the day, students will then perform a strength movement and finally, they will participate in the daily work out. The warm up, strength and work out of the day can all be modified to meet the fitness needs of each student while focusing on proper form. Students will increase their strength and fitness levels while also creating a positive self image.
